FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP, RUSSIA 2017: PREVIEW AND FIXTURES

The Confederations Cup kicks off today, and is routinely referred to as a warm-up for the World Cup. It's not inaccurate, of course, but it's also not exactly a summer invitational either.

Unless you're the host nation, you have to qualify for the event by winning your continental competition, or the World Cup itself. Which means getting here is tougher than qualifying for a World Cup. Much tougher, in fact. (Unless you hail from Oceania, in which case it's easier, because you don't have to go through a playoff against a side from another confederation.)

GERMANY (3)
While it's true that Germany, the defending world champions, are sending an under-strength squad, it's equally true that this decision is pretty much unprecedented. It's not as if Joachim Low's team is made up of pub players either, which is why they're still among the favorites.

Still, Low was criticised by Alexei Sorokin, head of the Russia 2018 World Cup organising committee.

"The heart of a football fan bleeds when the reigning World Cup winner plays without stars -- they are the reason fans attend matches," he said.

His words suggest that perhaps he's a better organizer than he is a salesman: It's hard to picture Vince McMahon or PT Barnum effectively saying, "Hey fans! There are no stars here so you probably shouldn't buy tickets!"

Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng, Marco Reus, Mats Hummels and Mesut Ozil are all staying home. They're all 27 or older, and apart from Boateng and Reus (who both missed a big chunk of last season due to injury and are being given time off to ensure they heal fully), they all played at least 53 competitive games in the past 12 months.

With a congested season coming up, you can see why Low doesn't want to take any chances. Leroy Sane, Mario Gotze, Julian Weigl and Manuel Neuer will also be absent due to injury, although you'd imagine if this were the real thing, most of them would grit their teeth and find a way to be there.

But don't be fooled. This isn't quite Germany's B-team. There is plenty of depth at the back with the likes of Jonas Hector, Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rudiger, plus Bayern-bound Niklas Sule. Further up the pitch, Julian Draxler -- who had a strong finish to the season at Paris Saint-Germain -- and former wunderkind Timo Werner are bound to pack a mean punch. This Germany side have a point to prove and are coming in hungry.

CHILE (4)
They'll face stern competition in Group B, which is easily the tougher of the two groups. Chile, winners of the Copa America, have transitioned from folk hero Jorge Sampaoli to Juan Antonio Pizzi, but the philosophy hasn't changed much.

Expect furious pressing, high tempo and a tremendous amount of self-belief. Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal and Gary Model lead a side with tons of chemistry and experience; 11 players have at least 50 caps and seven have been capped at least 90 times.

CAMEROON (32)
Then there's Cameroon. They were one of the stories of 2017 when, after a rash of veteran stars turned down Hugo Broos' African Nations Cup call-up, they still went out and won the tournament against all odds.

Having been written off like that once before, you don't want to discount them again, particularly when they have one of the most exciting players around -- and the hero of the Nations Cup -- in Christian Bassogog.

AUSTRALIA (48)
After winning the Asian Cup in dramatic fashion, Ange Postecoglou's Australia are looking to cause an upset or two in Russia.

This is a team that is greater than the sum of its parts, with a potential shutdown keeper in Matthew Ryan and a golden oldie -- 37-year-old Tim Cahill -- up front. Plus, the Socceroos relish the underdog tag more than most.

RUSSIA (63)
Over in Group A, hosts Russia have had a difficult time, prompting even president Vladimir Putin to urge them to play "like warriors." They were disappointing at the Euros, and the build up to the Confederations Cup hasn't been great either.

Coach Stanislav Cherchesov won the Double in Poland, but left to answer his country's call and lead the pre-World Cup shake-up. An already uninspiring squad has been further depleted by injuries to defender Mario Fernandes, midfielder Roman Zobnin, target man Artem Dzyuba and (most of all) Alan Dzagoev, Russia's main creative threat. Russian fans are ready to get behind them, but the pressure is huge. And stoking enthusiasm seems like a really tall order right now.

PORTUGAL (8)
Cristiano Ronaldo -- who else? -- leads a strong Portugal team with a nice blend of veterans (Nani, Pepe, Jose Fonte, Ricardo Quaresma) and youth (Andre Silva, Bernardo Silva, Raphael Guerreiro). At the Euros, they were stronger than their imperfections and seemingly had a hero -- and, no, it wasn't always Ronaldo -- pop up in every game.

Now, it almost feels as if they don't need it: That's what getting the monkey off your back can do, particularly when you have a savvy tactician like Fernando Santos pulling the strings on the bench.

MEXICO (17)
Mexico are ranked 17th in the world and have been close to perfect in CONCACAF qualifying, though the 7-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of Chile in the Copa America Centenario a year ago still stings. Juan Carlos Osorio has put together a tough side, with a genuine goal-threat in Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez up front and a wily midfield.

Gold Cup aside, Mexico have achieved little on the big stage. Given the favourable draw, this could be as good a chance as they've had in a long time.

NEW ZEALAND (95)
New Zealand are Oceania's representatives and most have them earmarked to prop up the bottom of the group, a bit like Tahiti four years ago. But make no mistake about it: the All Whites are no Tahiti. They're a smaller nation that thinks -- and plays -- like a bigger one, mainly to maximise the skills of centre-forward Chris Wood, who scored 27 goals for Leeds United in the English second tier last year.

The talent gap is obvious -- and the absence of Premier League defender Winston Reid won't help -- but they're an awkward side to play against.


Above all else, this could be the last ever Confederations Cup. Rumours are rife that FIFA are exploring the possibility of replacing it with a club competition held in the summer, something like a global version of the Champions League.

If that's the case, you hope the event will go out with a bang -- at least enough to get folks excited for the big tournament, which is less than a year away.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday when Russia play New Zealand in St Petersburg, with the hosts promising there will be no repeat of the violence which marred Euro 2016.

Real Madrid reveal 2017/18 home and away kits to mark 115th anniversary

The new home kit features blue Adidas stripes along the shoulder while the away strip is a tasty black and turquoise number

Real Madrid have unveiled their home and away strips for the 2017/18 season.

Zinedine Zidane's men enjoyed an incredible campaign last term, winning the Champions League and La Liga.

Real also won the FIFA Club World Cup last term, with their success celebrated on both strips.

The new home kit features the traditional Adidas stripes along the shoulder, in blue with a v-neck collar.

Real will also return to a black away kit for the 2017/18 season.

The reverse strip is complete with turquoise trim, with three stripes down the side of the jersey.

Real's goalkeeper strip, which David De Gea is unlikely to wear at the Bernabeu, is a khaki green colour.

All three kits - complete with the latest in performance technology - commemorate the club's 115th anniversary, with a memorial stamp at the bottom.

Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema were among those to launch the strip.

Unsurprisingly, the new number comes at a cost with the official Adi Zero shirt to go on sale at a cool £90.00.

Replica home shirts are available for around £65.00 or £70.00 for long sleeve.

Premier League fixtures 2017/18 in full: Complete list and key dates of every match for the new season

The new season's Premier League fixtures have landed, so we all know where we will be for the next ten months.

Manchester United will begin the new Premier League campaign at home to West Ham on August 12.

Jose Mourinho's side have been handed what appears to be a relatively favourable start to the new campaign as they bid to launch a tile challenge.

After West Ham, United face Swansea away, Leicester at home and Stoke away, before taking on Everton at Old Trafford on September 16.

Champions Chelsea host Burnley bidding to extend their impressive record of having won 16, drawn six and lost only three of their opening day fixtures.

New Watford boss Marco Silva faces a difficult task at Vicarage Road with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool the visitors on the opening day.

Elsewhere Arsene Wenger begins his bid to get Arsenal back into the top four and into the title mix by hosting deposed champions Leicester.

Ronald Koeman's side have arguably the toughest start of any Premier League club, opening their campaign at home to Stoke, then facing trips to Manchester City and champions Chelsea, before hosting Tottenham and travelling to Manchester United.

The first Manchester derby of the new season is at Old Trafford on December 9, with the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium on April 7.

United take on arch rivals Liverpool at Anfield on October 14, with Mourinho's side hosting Jurgen Klopp's men on March 10 at the Theatre of Dreams.

Mourinho's side, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season but clinched a Champions League place by winning the Europa League, host Burnley on Boxing Day and go to Everton on New Year's Day.

United host last season's runners-up Tottenham on October 28, travelling to White Hart Lane on January 31, while the Reds go to Arsenal on December 2, with the corresponding fixture on April 28.

Chelsea host United on November 11 at Stamford Bridge, while Antonio Conte's side travel to Old Trafford – where they lost 2-0 last season – on February 24.

United have – on paper, at least - a relatively comfortable run-in, facing West Brom, Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton and ending the campaign at home to Watford on May 13.

Pep Guardiola's City host both Merseyside clubs in the first month of the new season. City open their domestic campaign away to Brighton on August 12, then face Everton at home and Bournemouth away, before hosting Liverpool on September 9.

City travel to Stamford Bridge on September 30 and host the champions on March 3, while Guardiola's men are at Newcastle on Boxing Day and at home to Watford on New Year's Day.

With the exception of United and Spurs, whom they face in succession, City can reflect on a decent run-in, taking on Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield and Southampton.

After the trip to Watford, Liverpool then host Crystal Palace, before two big tests in a row, at home to Arsenal and away to Manchester City.

The first Merseyside derby of the new season is at Anfield on December 9, with Klopp's men making the short trip to Goodison Park on April 7.

Liverpool are at home to Swansea – who beat them at Anfield last season – on Boxing Day and away to Burnley on New Year's Day.

The Reds close the season with games against West Brom away, at home to Stoke, away to Chelsea and close the campaign at home to Brighton.

Premier League returners Newcastle host Tottenham on the opening weekend, but have a decent run thereafter against Huddersfield, West Ham, Swansea, Stoke and Brighton, before hosting Liverpool on September 30.

But Rafa Benitez's side are facing a potentially tough run-in, with Arsenal at home, Everton away, then West Brom at home and Watford away, ending the season at home to champions Chelsea.

When will Sky Sports and BT Sport announce their TV fixtures?

Both TV companies will thrash out details for the games covering August to September. These are likely to be released at the beginning of July.

Sky Sports said: "We expect to bring you details of the first batch of Premier League fixtures - those to be shown live on Sky Sports in August and September - at the beginning of July.

"Sky Sports will show 126 live top-flight games in 2017/18 and mobile users will once again be able to see in-game goals and match highlights."

That clears that up then.
When does the new season start?

The 2017/18 campaign gets underway on Saturday August 12.
When does the season finish?

The final day will be Sunday May 13, 2018.

The burden of signing players at Manchester United this summer will fall solely on the shoulders of CEO Ed Woodward after Jose Mourinho says he is “fed up” of football after an exhausting first year at Old Trafford.

United is expected to have another busy summer when the transfer window opens on June 9, with Mourinho reportedly giving Woodward a list of four players he wants. Reports have linked the club with strikers Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann and defender Victor Lindelof.

Signing for United has become a more attractive prospect after the club qualified for next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League in May, Mourinho’s third trophy of the season, after the League Cup and Charity Shield. And it was after the Europa League final in Stockholm that Mourinho revealed that Woodward knows the targets he wants.

“Ed Woodward has my list, what I want, what I would like for more than two months,” he told BT Sport. “So now it’s up to him and the owners. But I don’t care about football for now.”

He reiterated the message Tuesday, insisting the signings would be up to Woodward, who became executive vice-chairman at the club in 2012.

“This year, I had the most difficult season of my career,” Mourinho told VLT, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “We played all of the games that were possible minus two.

“I got fed up and tired of football until the last day. I promised that you would not see me in football stadiums, and I stopped negotiating for players and being worried.

“I handed my list to the CEO in April and he has until August 31 to give me what I want, or not.”

If Everton striker Lukaku was on that list, United appears to have had a poor start to the summer after the Belgian chose a move back to Chelsea over joining Mourinho, The Times reported.

A striker will certainly be on Mourinho’s list as Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffered an injury that will likely see him miss the start of next season. The 35 year old’s contract at United will expire in the summer, though the club said it will continue to support his recovery from injury.

Woodward has delivered top transfers in the past. Last summer, he oversaw the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus for £90 million (about $116 million) that broke the world transfer record. That summer the club also signed Ibrahimovic, the top scorer last season, as well as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly.

The unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice, as Real Madrid crushed a helpless Juventus to retain their UEFA Champions League crown at the Millenium stadim in Cardiff, South coast of Wales.

The Final showpiece of Europe's elites was finely poised between the most solid defending and one of the most lethal attacking sides in the competition, but it was Zinedine Zidane's men who wore their glass slippers to the ball, as they showed class to enforce the famous saying "the best form of defence is attack" in a fairy tale Finale. Allegri's Bianconeri had conceeded just 3 goals, while the Los Blancos racked up an amazing 32 goals enroute the final showpiece. The build up to the game had both fans expectations over the roof, as there was going to be no big name absentees due to injuries or suspensions, although Real's Gareth Bale had just made a speedy recovery in time to be fit for the piece, not fully fit. Many of the Italian fans waited to applaud the runners-up at the National Stadium of Wales, where the roof was closed due to safety and security reasons as vigilance increased in the wake of the Manchester attack.

The opening ceremony of the UEFA Champions League Final 2017 was intended to be lit up by a "fergie-less" black eyed peas to the dismay of many in the fully packed millenium stadium. They did though perform their hit track "i gotta feeling", amongst other songs, and indeed the night went on to be a "good night" for both the Madrid fans and the neutrals.

Smoke from the pyrotechnics hung high when play finally got under way, with the Old Lady flying out of the blocks and moving the ball around with confidence and authority.
Ex-Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain led the lines early on for Juve, asking questions of Keylor Navas in the Madrid goal with an early header and long-range strike that surprised Keylor Navas, with the goalkeeper soon producing a one-handed save as stunning as Miralem Pjanic's volleyed effort.

Real gradually settled into their stride but found Juventus' defence unsurprisingly difficult to breakdown, with late challenges and smart play denying them a shot until the 20th minute, and my was it worth the wait.
A Superb play saw the ball moved from left to right where Dani Carvajal collected a pass from Ronaldo, with marauding full-back playing it first time straight back to the Portuguese, who swept home a sublime right-footed strike via a slight deflection off Leonardo Bonucci past Gigi Buffon in the Juve goal to open the scoring.

The speed and quality of the move was outstanding, with Ronaldo celebrating in front of the Juve fans with typical flamboyance.

Massimiliano Allegri's side rallied impressively and soon levelled in the most emphatic fashion.
Higuain controlled a first-time cross from Alex Sandro and directed onto the Croatian, who cushioned the ball with his chest and produced an effort that left the footballing world open-mouthed.

Mandzukic's wonderful overhead kick from just inside the box looped home past a fully stretched Navas to give Juventus a deserved leveller - a goal they were unable to add to before a breathless first half came to an end.

Real came back blazing from the break, and from their on, their French maestro of a manager had worked his magic. The defending champions started the second period far better than the first, with Luka Modric and Marcelo having efforts as they pushed forwards in numbers. Isco directed wide as the Spaniards continued to threaten to score a goal that arrived in the 61st minute.

Casemiro ran onto the loose ball after a shot was blocked, hitting a thundering 40-yard screamer that deflected off Sami Khedira's heels and out of Buffon's reach to put the resilient Madrid back in front.
Things only got worse for the Bianconeri and pretty quickly too, as they fell further behind.
Fine build up play down the right unleashed Modric who hooked the ball back from the byline with outstanding precision, with Ronaldo getting ahead of his man to direct home at the near post for his second of the night, Juve had been dealt the killer blow.

Ronaldo attempted to complete his hat-trick before Marcelo missed the target, with Zidane bringing on Bale to the delight of the Welsh contingent inside the ground.
A last-ditch challenge prevented him getting on the end of a Ronaldo cross, with Sandro heading wide at the other end.
Matters went from bad to worse for the Italians as Juan Cuadrado picked up a second booking in quick succession. Tempers frayed after Ramos' theatrical reaction on a night that ended with him lifting the Champions League.

Marcelo then went on to set up substitute Marco Asensio who swept in their fourth goal in the last minute to add gloss to a mouth-watering performance by the men from the Spanish capital.
