Jose Mourinho blasts media over Eto'o comment

Jose Mourinho says the media should be 'embarrassed' over secret recording of Samuel Eto'o age comments

The Chelsea Manager insists disparaging comments about Chelsea striker were a joke

Jose Mourinho has blasted the media for the reaction to his comments regarding striker Samuel Eto’o’s age after the Chelsea manager was caught questioning how old the Cameroonian is as well as the quality in attack he has to choose from.

Mourinho was heard making the remarks before a one-on-one interview with French TV channel Canal Plus, but he has defended his comments and instead launched an attack on the journalist who recorded his words without the Portuguese’s knowledge.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 tie with Galatasaray, Mourinho said: “I think you should be embarrassed as a media professionals because by the ethical point of view I don't think you are happy your colleague is happy to be able to record a private conversation and to make it public.

“I think you should all be embarrassed because it is against your ethic. Is it a not happy comment, absolutely.

“I am not defending what I am saying, I am attacking something that is from your professional area. That person showed what he is or what he does not know about the job.

“The comment is not a good one and not one I would do in a serious, official way. First of all because I don't make fun, second if there are managers in the world that defend their players I am one of them.

“Third because Samuel Eto'o is Samuel Eto'o. Four times a Champions League winner. It was with him I had the best ever season of my career. It was a funny conversation between me and someone not in the football world. It is a disgrace someone is taping a private conversation.”

'The Special One' may have been flustered in his attack, given that Eto'o has only won the European Cup three times - twice with Barcelona in 2005-06 and 2008-09. and once with Inter Milan under Mourinho in 2009-10 - but perhaps the fourth will be added this season in a sign of things to come for the Blues.

His fierce attack comes after he was caught on tape suggesting that his current options of Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba are not enough for what he has planned with this Chelsea team.

“The problem with Chelsea is I lack a striker,” Mourinho said, elaborating on his side’s lack of goals coming from strikers. “I have Eto'o but he is 32 years old, maybe 35, who knows?”

MOURINHO CAUGHT ASKING 'ETO'O IS 32 YEARS OLD, MAYBE 35, WHO KNOWS?

Mourinho then turned his attentions to Wednesday’s match, where he will face former Blues striker Didier Drogba. The 35-year-old Ivorian has been the focus of the pre-match build-up having spent eight trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge, but he will now face his former club as well as his close friend in Mourinho.

“I look forward to every match,” Mourinho admitted. “I like to play. I am happy to do it, I like to do it against the best and Galatasaray is the Turkish champion. To face Didier Drogba is difficult and a strange feeling but we have to do our job, we know that he wants to do his job. I want to do my job by trying to help the team and he wants to do his by scoring.

“It is a strange feeling to face him.”

The 52-year-old also stressed that while his side were not considered favourites for the Champions League crown, progression to the quarter-finals would give them a great chance to succeed much like his previous two-successful campaigns, and also like Chelsea triumphant season of 2011-12.

“We are not favourites (to win the competition), obviously,” he accepted. “But when a team reaches the quarter final, anything is possible. This round is a very important round because the teams who reach the quarter final can start having a little feeling.

“Chelsea won it when they were not the favourite, I won it twice when I was not favourite. I didn't win when my team was one of the favourites.

“This competition has a bit of a space for a surprise. It is clear there are at least three, maybe four or five, that are by quality and experience obviously favourites.”

Zenit vs Dortmund Preview

ZENIT ST. PETERSBURG VS BORUSSIA DORTMUND ; Klopp hopes Yellow and Black will glow under Russian snow

This match will be the first time Borussia Dortmund and Zenit St Petersburg have faced each other. The first leg of this Round of 16 tie will be held in Petersburg at the Petrovosky Stadium, a place where Zenit have lost only once this season.

Zenit currently sit second in the Russian Premier League behind leaders Lokomotiv Moscow, but only on goal difference. In the tournament’s group stage, Zenit finished a massive ten points behind Group G leaders Atletico Madrid, winning only two of their six group matches en route to the knockout stages of the tournament.

The Russian club has failed to replicate their consistent domestic form on the European stage and have conceded nine goals, scoring only four in reply. Forwards Hulk and Kerzhakov have scored a brace each and are the only two Zenit players to score in the Champions League this season.

Borussia Dortmund have had a similar season, doing well in one competition and performing below their best in the other. Jurgen Klopp’s team qualified top in Group F, in what was dubbed the ‘Group of Death’. With three teams finishing on twelve points after six group games, Dortmund’s superior goal difference helped them edge out Arsenal to claim the top spot and left Napoli to re-join the Europa League.

Der BvB are currently third in the Bundesliga, one point behind second placed Bayer Leverkusen; however they are twenty points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Topping their Champions League group has been a stark contrast to their Bundesliga form. Injuries have plagued the side with centre back Neven Subotic and highly rated central midfielder Ilkay Gundogan being sidelined with injuries since the latter half of 2013. Recent injuries to Sven Bender and Jakub Blaszczykowski have not helped the cause.

With Dortmund’s domestic title hopes over, their Champions League campaign has taken on added importance. Securing crucial away goals, making it easier to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament, will be high on the agenda.

PAST MEETINGS ;

The sides have NEVER met before.

STATS ;

The Champions League knockout round of 16 will be the first time Borussia Dortmund and Zenit St Petersburg will face each other in the history of the two European clubs.

Zenit have only lost five times this season, two of those defeats have been in the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund’s first defeat of the season was in the Champions League this year, against Napoli in September.

Apart from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund are the only side in the Bundesliga this season who have a goal difference of over twenty.

OLYMPIAKOS VS MANCHESTER UNITED PREVIEW

OLYMPIAKOS VS MANCHESTER UNITED ; Red Devils visit Greece,hoping to find Achilles foot

Since the 2003/04 season, Olympiakos have won eight of the last ten domestic league campaigns in Greece, leading to an unprecedented dominance in the Superleague. In the current season, the club have won 24 of their 26 league matches and are yet to lose a match.

The Greek club have only lost twice outside their domestic campaign this term, both times at the hands of Group C toppers Paris Saint-Germain. Olympiakos finished second behind the Parisian club, level on points with Benfica, but with a better goal difference.

Olympiakos leapfrogged Benfica on the last match day of the Champions League group stage, winning 3-1 against the visiting Portuguese club. Former Argentina international and one time Benfica forward Javier Saviola scored twice for them that night.

David Moyes’ best bet of playing Champions League football with Manchester United next season may be automatic qualification, something only achievable by winning the tournament this term. With United currently 11 points behind fourth paced Liverpool, qualifying for the Champions League via the league is looking increasingly unlikely and more difficult with each passing game.

A horrid start to the New Year with three consecutive defeats, Moyes has managed to gain maximum points from only three out of a possible 11 fixtures played in 2014, which also included a Capital One Cup semi-final exit on penalties against Sunderland.

The news of Wayne Rooney’s new long-term deal may provide some respite from this season's negative headlines for fans, but £37m signing Juan Mata will have to sit this one out as he is cup tied. Though Moyes has come under a lot of fire this season, a successful Champions League run could lay to rest any talk that the Scot is not up to the job.

Olympiakos, who lost their Champions League top scorer Kostas Mitroglou to Fulham in the January transfer window, have never beaten Manchester United before. This tie does favour Manchester United, but given this season’s dip in form, the Red Devils will have to be careful while travelling away to Greece, a place where Olympiakos have enjoyed a great season of football this year.

PAST THREE MEETINGS...

Olympiakos 2 (Choutos, Djordjevic) Manchester United 3 (Blanc, Veron, Scholes), Champions League, October 2002.

Manchester United 4 (Giggs 2, Veron, Solskjaer) Olympiakos 0, Champions League, October 2002.

Manchester United 3 (Solskjaer, Giggs, van Nistelrooy) Olympiakos 0, Champions League, October 2001.

STATS ;

Olympiakos have failed to beat Manchester United in four previous Champions Leagues meetings, scoring twice and conceding 12 goals.

Manchester United are unbeaten in the Champions League so far, winning four and drawing two of their six games this season.

Olympiakos are unbeaten in their last 15 games having won 14 and drawn 1.

Ryan Giggs is only three games short of equalling Raul’s record of 142 appearances in the Champions League.
