Following yesterday’s Champions League draw, it was the turn of the Europa League this afternoon. The draw took place in Monaco for a second day, where all 48 teams in the competition were allocated into their competitive groups.
There are only two Spanish teams competing in this year’s Europa League, after Real Sociedad crashed out at the hands of Kuban Krasnodar last night in Russia. Arrasate’s men were beaten 3-0 on the night, leaving just two teams to represent La Liga in the Europa League.
Marcelino’s Villarreal were the first names out of the hat, being allocated into Group D. They were later joined by Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Zürich and Apollon of Greece. Villarreal cruised past FC Astana in style last night, beating the Kazakhstan side 4-0 at El Madrigal, making it 7-0 on aggregate.
And of course Sevilla, the reigning champions of the competition. Unai Emery’s men were not forced to go through qualifying after picking up the trophy in Turin earlier in the summer. They were allocated into Group G alongside Standard Liege, Feyenoord and Rijeka of Croatia.
