Manchester United are confident that they can beat Liverpool to Real Madrid's Sami Khedira this summer, according to reports.
Khedira is primed to leave Real on a free transfer at the end of the season, after admitting he wants a fresh challenge recently.
And while Schalke have made no secret of their interest in the German international - and claim to have already begun talks - United believe they can pip the Bundesliga outfit to the midfielder's signature, according to The Sun.
It is claimed that United's top four spot and greater financial muscle will also see them shrug off interest from Liverpool to win the race for the 28-year-old.
The player's agent, Jorg Neubauer, has reportedly held preliminary talks with a series of interested clubs in recent weeks, with Financial Fair Play rules making the prospect of landing a top player for no fee particularly appealing to Europe's heavyweights.
It is thought that United will offer Khedira £150,000-a-week to move to Old Trafford and that ought to be enough to swing the deal in their favour, according to reports.
Schalke president Clemens Tonnies told Sport1 last week: "I have a high opinion of Sami Khedira because he's a leader who can improve the team.
"He has an incredible reputation with the national team. We've spoken several times.
"Now, Horst Heldt [Schalke's sporting director] and Khedira's agent must find a satisfactory solution."
