Roy Hodgson to announce England World Cup squad list

England manager Roy Hodgson will announce his 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil this summer on Monday, May 12, the day after the Premier League season ends.

As reported on Wednesday on the FA website, the Three Lions boss will make the announcement to the media at England sponsor Vauxhall's Griffin House HQ in Luton.

Further to the 23 named, Hodgson will also announce seven standby players before confirming his final squad on June 2, per BBC Sport.

Club England managing director Adrian Bevington said: "This will be an important day for Roy and the players ahead of an exciting summer in Brazil. It is always a day of interest to the whole country."

The showpiece event in Brazil gets underway on June 12 with England's opening group game against Italy taking place two days later in Manaus.

They then face other group members Uruguay on June 19 and finally Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte on June 24.

Three friendlies have been scheduled for the England team prior to their World Cup campaign against Peru, Honduras and Ecuador.

The 66-year-old manager revealed on Tuesday that he would not be making any decisions based on performances in the last two weeks of the Premier League season, per BBC Sport:

This suggests Hodgson has already decided on the majority of players who will eventually make up his squad that will travel to Brazil.

The usual suspects including Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Joe Hart are all but guaranteed a spot on the plane while the likes of Leighton Baines, Daniel Sturridge and Gary Cahill have played their way into the squad after impressive seasons.

Speculation abounds as to whether England veteran Ashley Cole will make the squad with Southampton's Luke Shaw expected to challenge him as Baines' back-up at left-back.

The Telegraph's Henry Winter noted Cole's defensive quality after Chelsea's clean sheet performance at Atletico Madrid last week:

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez has cruelly been ruled out through injury but teammates Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert will be hoping for a call-up.

The squad will finally be revealed next month but this announcement will only further the speculation about which players will eventually make the plane.
