Sunderland have reportedly expressed an interested in signing Salomon Kalou if their pursuit of Fabio Borini fails.
The Black Cats agreed a deal to sign the Liverpool striker on a permanent basis following his loan spell with the club last season, but have been unable to finalise a contract with the Italian.
According to the Sunderland Echo, Gus Poyet's side will make a move for the former Chelsea striker is they are unable to complete the transfer.
Kalou left Chelsea in 2012 to join French side Lille.
