Arsenal made a MISTAKE by signing Alexis Sanchez - Mikael Silvestre

Former Arsenal and Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre claims the Gunners have made a mistake by signing Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

Sanchez completed a £32m move to the Emirates earlier this summer, but Silvestre has cast doubt over whether he was the sort of addition Arsenal really needed.

Arsenal fans have generally reacted jubilantly to the Chilean's arrival but Silvestre has suggested that the money might have been better spent elsewhere.

"Arsenal have already got that type of player - quick, sharp, fast - they have enough of them already in Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla," Silvestre told Goal.

"What they really need is someone like Olivier Giroud, I think that should be their priority at the moment.

"Sanchez could have gone anywhere after his tremendous World Cup but I do not think he is the type of player the club need right now."

Arsenal are thought to remain keen to bring in further additions this summer - with a move for Sami Khedira still mooted - but it seems that Arsene Wenger's search for attacking reinforcements may have come to an end with Sanchez's arrival.

It now remains to be seen whether Wenger revises his position before the transfer window draws to a close on September 1.
