Radamel Falcao will be reportedly be allowed to stay at Manchester United in the summer, but only if he agrees to accept a place on the bench and drop his wage demands.
United have the option to make Falcao's loan move permanent at the end of the season for £43million.
And while the Red Devils are reluctant to pay that amount for a player who has underwhelmed in his first season at Old Trafford, Van Gaal is ready to offer the Colombian a life-line, according to the Daily Mail.
It is suggested that United will offer Falcao the chance to stay in Manchester but will not guarantee him first-team football.
And as a rotation player, United expect the 29-year-old to reduce his wage demands.
Falcao is one of United's top earners, raking in £265,000-a-week but that figure would have to be slashed if he doesn't want to move on.
Over the weekend Van Gaal said: "Falcao has been given the chance to be in the team this season. You can say he is unlucky - he has the quality to play.
"I like him and the way he played against Chelsea last week. He was unlucky he didn't score.
"I like Falcao as a human being, just as I like Danny Welbeck and Chicharito (Hernandez), they are always professional.
"But when you are not in the team for season after season, there comes a time when you need a challenge.
"That's why I have said goodbye to Welbeck and Chicharito. And now I have to talk with Falcao."
