Arsenal are reportedly ready to step up their pursuit of Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes.
The Gunners have been criticised by some observers for not improving their back line significantly in recent years.
However, The People claims that manager Arsene Wenger is keen on a deal for the German international and Arsenal scouts were sent to watch Howedes play in Schalke's 4-0 win over Stuttgart, last weekend.
While the 26-year-old still has two years left on his current contract with the Royal Blues, Arsenal are hoping that his friendship with Per Mertesacker will help attract the centre-back to the Emirates Stadium.
Howedes, who can play at left-back or in the heart of the back line, is said to be valued at £15m, a price-tag that is unlikely to put off the FA Cup winners.
