Chelsea sign Remy

QPR striker Loic Remy has signed a four-year deal with Chelsea, the club have confirmed.

As revealed by Goal on Friday, the Blues reignited their interest in the France international after reaching a deal to loan Fernando Torres to AC Milan.

Arsenal made a late move to hijack Remy's move to Chelsea, but soon dropped their interest to pave the way for the striker to move to Stamford Bridge.

"I feel very happy and very proud," he told Chelsea's official website. "When I heard Chelsea wanted to sign me I said "let's go" straight away because they are one of the best clubs in the world.

"I remember the amazing atmosphere at Stamford Bridge when I played there for Marseille and I can't wait to play for the first time in front of my new fans."

Borussia Dortmund confirm Shinji Kagawa return

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that they have re-signed Shinji Kagawa.

The Japanese international left the Bundesliga outfit for Manchester United in the summer of 2012, but he has struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford.

As a result, he had been deemed surplus to requirements by new United boss Louis van Gaal, which brought about the interest from his former employers, who have paid a reported £6m to secure the playmaker's services for a second time.

Speaking to the club's official website after he had signed a four-year contract at the Westfalenstadion, the 25-year-old said: "I have already said on the day of my departure in an interview that the chapter Borussia Dortmund is not complete for me.

"I wanted to meet me in the Premier League a dream. Now I'm just happy to be back in Dortmund. In this great team, this madness environment and the unique fans. BVB is like a family. I am proud that she has never forgotten me."

Kagawa made a total of 57 appearances for United, during which he scored six goals.

Tottenham close in on Welbeck signing

Spurs are hoping to secure a loan deal for the England international before the close of the transfer window, with the 23-year-old having fallen down the Old Trafford pecking order

Tottenham are closing in on the season-long loan signing of Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck, Goal understands.

The clubs are in advanced negotiations over a loan fee of around €2.5 million and Spurs have agreed to pay the 23-year-old’s salary in full, with the deal likely to be completed on deadline day on Monday.

Welbeck came close to leaving United at the end of last season, but opted to try to force his way back into the first team when Louis van Gaal took over following the World Cup.

However, the player and manager have been speaking over the last few weeks as to Welbeck’s future at the club – and following the arrival of Angel Di Maria, the England international has found himself even further from first-team reckoning.

With United willing to let him go, Newcastle, Sunderland and Hull all enquired after Welbeck, with Arsenal also monitoring the situationl, but Tottenham were always Welbeck’s preferred option and an agreement is now close between the two clubs.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino values the England international’s pace and versatility as a player who can play either centrally or from a wide position.

Welbeck’s arrival could spell the end of Roberto Soldado’s stay at White Hart Lane, with the Spaniard drawing interest from Italy and Spain.

Atletico Madrid have retained their interest from earlier in the summer but are so far only proposing a loan deal, with Tottenham preferring a permanent transfer.

The 29-year-old has failed to live up to expectations following his arrival from Valencia for over €30m last summer, scoring just six goals in 29 Tottenham appearances.

He has found himself out of the side again at the start of the new season, with Emmanuel Adebayor preferred to lead the attack in Tottenham’s opening three league fixtures.

Mario Balotelli not included in Italy squad

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has not been included in Antonio Conte's first Italy squad.

Andrea Pirlo and Riccardo Montolivo are also not in the squad after picking up injuries.

Conte was appointed as the national manager following the departure of Cesare Prandelli after the 2014 World Cup and has named his first 27-man squad for a forthcoming friendly with the Netherlands and a Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway.

Balotelli would have been available for the friendly, but after picking up two yellow cards in three World Cup matches, he is suspended for the game away in Norway next week.

Martin Keown: 'Arsenal need experience up front'

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has spoken of the Gunners' need to sign an experienced striker, insisting that the club's fans shouldn't have to "wait for a youngster" to break through.

Olivier Giroud suffered a broken foot in the 2-2 draw against Everton last week, leading to speculation on whether Arsene Wenger will sign a replacement up front.

Keown told BBC Sport: "He probably should [sign a striker].

"It would not be good news for Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell, but he did something similar when Ian Wright was let go and he bought Nicolas Anelka.

"The Arsenal fans do not want to wait for a youngster to be ready."

Wenger has previously admitted that he 'doesn't know' whether he will sign a new striker.

Manchester United in talks to sign Roma's Kevin Strootman

Talks have begun between Manchester United and Roma over the potential sale of Kevin Strootman, according to reports.

Strootman played under Louis van Gaal when the Old Trafford boss was in charge of the Dutch national team, although the Roma midfielder's World Cup dream was cruelly shattered by a cruciate ligament injury suffered in March.

However, the 24-year-old is close to a return to fitness and The Telegraph has reported that talks between the two sides have begun over a transfer which would take place in January.

Manchester United have already spent in excess in £140m on transfers this summer, but van Gaal is keen to add more players to his squad after his side have been unable to win any of their first four games this season.

Redknapp: 'Loic Remy should choose Arsenal over Chelsea'

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp believes that Loic Remy would be better suited to Arsenal over Chelsea.

The Queens Park Rangers striker is reportedly attracting the attention of both London clubs with the September 1 transfer deadline drawing closer, and Redknapp thinks that the France international would get more games at the Gunners.

He told Sky Sports News: "When you look at the market, I think that is a great deal, it's a bargain.

"He's got two of the biggest clubs in the country vying for him, and it's up to him, but if he goes to Chelsea, is he going to take Diego Costa's place? I don't think so.

"At Arsenal, I think he might end up starting three or four months of the season now with Olivier Giroud's injury. At Chelsea, it's a closed door to a certain extent, it looks like [he'll only play] FA Cup, League Cup and that might be the only competition he gets really."

Remy almost moved to Liverpool earlier this summer, but the Reds cancelled the deal at the 11th hour due to his medical results.

However, there is a belief among the coaching staff at United that the Dutch international will not be at his best until he has the problem corrected, according to The People.

The report added, though, that no date has been set for the former Arsenal frontman to undergo the necessary procedure.

Shinji Kagawa seals Borussia Dortmund return

Those circumstances have alerted his former club Dortmund, who after having had a £6m bid accepted for Kagawa, agreed personal terms with the player today, according to Bild.

The report added that Kagawa will sign a four-year contract at the Westfalenstadion.

Arsene Wenger: 'Manchester United decline not Sir Alex Ferguson's fault'

Arsene Wenger has leapt to the defence of old adversary Sir Alex Ferguson, saying that the Scot is not to blame for Manchester United's decline.

After drawing with Burnley on Saturday afternoon, the Red Devils now have two points from a possible nine and have been criticised for their performances, but the Arsenal coach has suggested that their fortunes will change.

He told The Mirror: "If things have not gone well at the start, it is not Ferguson's fault.

"The world is competitive and it is a bit cyclical. Once you leave a club, you hope it goes as well as possible. That is what Ferguson wanted as well. Manchester United have just started the season and it will come back.

"If you look at the names they have, they will be a force in the Premier League. But I don't worry too much about them. They made us suffer enough in the past!"

However, according to the Daily Mail, PSG will test that resolve and try lure Cech to the French capital before the window shuts.

It is believed that the big-spending French outfit would prefer a loan move as it enables them to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Eibar : Atletico pick up first La Liga win of season

Atletico Madrid have held on to beat Eibar 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon to pick up their first victory of the La Liga campaign.

Last season's league champions opened up their scoring account with 11 minutes on the clock courtesy of Miranda, who made the most of some lacklustre defending to head home Koke's corner.

Mario Mandzukic doubled Atletico's lead on 26 minutes with a header of his own, with Gabi the provider on this occasion with his free kick being converted into the far corner of the net.

It was almost curtains for Eibar shortly after when Antoine Griezmann fired a shot away at goal, but his attempt ended narrowly wide of the target.

Ten minutes before the interval the newly-promoted side were right back in it, however, thanks to Abraham's curled effort into the top corner from outside the box.

Atletico looked to extend their lead once more before the end of the half, but Xabi Iruretagoiena managed to keep out Raul Garcia's effort.

The second 45 minutes lacked any real chances early on, with Eibar taking control for large spells but only really threatening through set pieces.

On the 75-minute mark Eneko Boveda met Grande Javi Lara's cross into the box, but his header failed to trouble Miguel Angel Moya.

Angel Moya nearly levelled the game with just two minutes remaining, only for his attempt to drop narrowly wide of the post to ensure that the Rojiblancos held out for all three points.

Espamyol 1-2 Sevilla : Sevilla see off Espanyol

Sevilla registered their first win of the season with a hard-fought victory away to Espanyol on Saturday.

The Europa League winners took the lead on 34 minutes when Carlos Bacca caught his opponent napping to reach Coke's cross before tucking the ball beyond Francisco Casilla.

Espanyol had started brightly when Sergio Garcia struck the post and Abraham fizzed an effort wide inside the first ten minutes.

However, Sevilla looked threatening during the opening period, with Bacca having forced a save from Casilla earlier in the half.

Just after the break, Sevilla seemed to have put the result beyond the Catalan side when Vicente Iborra rose to meet a pinpoint Denis Suarez's cross before putting his effort past a helpless Casilla.

However, the home side had pulled a goal back within a matter of moments as Christian Stuani headed home Victor Sanchez's cross.

Sevilla seemed unflustered by conceding and looked to add to their tally, with Ever Banega, Iborra and Alex Vidal going close for the visitors.

Indeed, they almost found a third in stoppage time when Nicolas Pareja struck the woodwork with a free kick, but it was the last kick of the game, which sees Sevilla stay in the top four for the time being, while Espanyol are still searching for their first league win of the season.

Jose Mourinho slams 'ridiculous' Chelsea defending

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that his side must work on their defensive balance if they are to win the Premier League title this season.

The Blues, who are currently top of the league table, came out on top 6-3 against Everton at Goodison Park this evening in what was a hugely entertaining contest.

"It was wonderful for everyone at the stadium and watching television around the world - but not for me," Mourinho told BBC Sport. "We cannot make so many defensive mistakes. We want to improve as a team by keeping our defensive strength and quality and improving in other areas.

"Today we showed we are improving in other areas but not keeping the balance in defence. The team likes to have the ball, that is very important but we need to keep our defensive balance and not commit mistakes.

"Wednesday afternoon we spent 90 minutes defending corners and free-kicks but today we conceded from a free-kick so I cannot be happy with the ridiculous goal we conceded."

Chelsea take on Swansea City in their next league game in two weeks time following the international break.

Tottenham Hotspur VS Liverpool Preview

This fixture demonstrated the gulf between Tottenham Hotspur, under André Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood, and those in the top four last season. Liverpool ran riot at White Hart Lane with Luis Suárez irrepressible, and then blitzed them in the return to the tune of a 9-0 aggregate scoreline. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, with a perfect record to date under the Argentinian, will provide a sterner test and, if they click into their upbeat rhythm, could leave Liverpool’s start to the campaign feeling stodgy. Arsenal 'hijack Chelsea Loic Remy move'

Arsenal have reportedly made a last-ditch attempt to complete a deal for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy from under the noses of fellow London rivals Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger talks up Alexis Sanchez in central role

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has tipped Alexis Sanchez to thrive in a central role and minimise the effects of losing striker Olivier Giroud to long-term injury.

The Gunners' £35m man opened his account for the club in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Besiktas, leading the line in the absence of the French striker.

Giroud is expected to be sidelined until January with a foot injury, prompting debate over whether or not Wenger will dip into the market before the transfer window closes on Monday.

"He has many qualities to lead the line," he told the club's official website.

"He is first of all brave, he is strong in the challenge - which you wouldn't expect when you look at his size - he's very quick and very mobile as well.

"He's a real fighter and once his link play and runs get better, he can be very good in this role."

Earlier on Sunday it was reported that Wenger had hijacked Chelsea's move for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy.

Filippo Inzaghi keen to spark Fernando Torres form

AC Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi is confident that he can help Fernando Torres rediscover his goalscoring form this season.

The Spaniard sealed a two-year loan move to San Siro on Friday as he bids to put a mixed three-and-a-half year stint at Chelsea behind him.

Torres arrived at Stamford Bridge for a hefty £50m in January 2011 but struggled to live up to his billing, scoring just 20 times in the Premier League since.

However, Inzaghi, who hit 126 goals in an illustrious playing career with Milan, says that he can aid Torres's resurgence in front of goal.

"It is up to me to get him back to the levels he is capable of and I will study his best position."

The 30-year-old could make his Rossoneri debut in the visit of Lazio this evening.

Hatem Ben Arfa snubs Besiktas switch

The lawyer of Newcastle United attacker Hatem Ben Arfa has claimed that his client has snubbed a move to Turkish side Besiktas in favour of staying in England.

It has been reported recently that the 27-year-old was keen to stay with Newcastle beyond the transfer window - which closes on Monday.

Besiktas, knocked out of Champions League qualifying by Arsenal on Wednesday, were among those reportedly weighing up a move for the Frenchman, but Jean Jacques Bertrand says that the switch is a "no go" due to the limited sporting incentive on offer.

"I received an email from the club confirming that Newcastle had found an agreement with Besiktas for the transfer of the player," Bertrand told French website Foot Mercato.

"I discussed the sporting advantages with his agent Michel Ouazine and Hatem without talking about the figures.

"Finally, Hatem has decided not to go with this offer. He prefers to stay in England and to play at Newcastle. Besiktas, it is therefore a no go."

Ben Arfa's contract expires next summer.

Sky Sport Italia claims that the Nerazzuri immediately turned down the La Liga side's bid to take Guarin for a season, with a view to a future permanent move and Inter are said to be wanting a higher offer.

It is also thought that the Italian giants would be willing to part company with the midfielder, but only if their price tag of €18m (£14.24m).

Guarin scored four times for Inter, last term.

Manuel Pellegrini disappointed with defeat

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has expressed his disappointment following his sides's 1-0 defeat against Stoke City this afternoon.

A second-half goal from former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf inflicted a first defeat of the season for the Premier League champions.

"It's a surprising defeat because we don't expect to lose against Stoke but these games sometimes happen," BBC Sport quotes Pellegrini as saying. "We tried from everywhere and really we are not very creative we did not find the space and that is credit to Stoke.

"The Yaya Toure penalty appeal was just one play during the game. Everyone that saw it told me it was a clear penalty but it was one play in 90 minutes.

"I am more worried about the goal they scored because it was too easy."

Today's defeat for City ended a run of 11 home league wins.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger returns to Brondby

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has rejoined Brondby.

The 29-year-old started his career with the Danish club, whom he left to join the Reds in January 2006.

However, after nine years at Anfield, he has now secured a return to the Brondby Stadium.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website, Agger has revealed that he turned down numerous other clubs to re-sign for Drengene Fra Vestegnen.

"Liverpool have been such a big part of my life and my family's lives for so long, that leaving is extremely difficult," said the centre-back. "The opportunity arose for me to return home to Brondby and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me.

"I wouldn't leave here to go anywhere else and that has been proven by my actions in recent seasons. I have turned down many offers to move to other Premier League and European clubs.

"I would like to thank the Liverpool supporters for the incredible backing they have given me in my time here and the warmth and generosity of spirit displayed to my family.

Agger made a total of 232 appearances for Liverpool.

Radamel Falcao denies real Madrid tweet

The Colombian had apparently tweeted that he was set to join the European Champions, saying it was a "dream come true" but he has since insisted the picture was fake

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao has dismissed claims that he is leaving to join Real Madrid, claiming picture of a tweet saying a move was imminent was fake.

The Colombian triggered suggestions he was imminetly leaving Stade Louis II when he was inexplicably left out of Leonardo Jardim's matchday squad for their 1-1 draw with Lille on Saturday.

Reports were rife about where the ex-Atletico Madrid man might be departing Ligue 1 for, with Manchester City, Juventus, Arsenal and Real Madrid all named as contenders in the chase for the 28-year-old.

But Falcao looked like he had ended speculation over his future by declaring his loyalties to Carlo Ancelotti's men, as a picture of a tweet in which he had declared that the move to the Santiago Bernabeu a "dream come true" started to spread through social media. The tweet had supposedly been posted and then quickly deleted by the attacker.

However, the striker took to social media to declare that the tweet was false.

"I have to refute a story about a tweet I have not done, that is photoshopped."
Monaco are yet to comment about whether Falcao is leaving the club after just a single full season with the club, while Real Madrid have similarly kept quiet on the rumours regarding the forward.

Daley Blind arrival fails to excite Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes has admitted to being uninspired by Manchester United's capture of Daley Blind.

The Red Devils confirmed this morning that they had reached an agreement with Ajax to sign the 24-year-old, who can play in either defence or midfield.

However, United legend Scholes believes that the club should have pursued "proper central midfielders", rather than "taking risks" on a player such as Blind.

"Is he a defensive midfielder? I think he can play left wing-back, but can he play left centre-half? I'm not sure. I think the only place he is going to play is midfield. We've got a few of these left-footed players now," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I'm not too sure what position he's going to play in. I don't think he's strong enough for a left-back in England. The only place where we can seem to get him into the team is central midfield. He's a very good footballer, don't get me wrong, but is he the answer centrally? We'll have to wait and see.

"We don't really know what position he is. I don't think United are in a position to be taking risks on people - is he a left-back? Is he a central midfield player? I think they need proper central midfielders. There's been a few on the market and they obviously haven't fancied them or not been able to get them, and now they've got someone who's maybe a bit-part central midfield player."

Blind is expected to arrive in Manchester this afternoon, where he will undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

Sam Allardyce criticises own players, referee after West Ham United defeat

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has criticised both his players and match referee Mike Dean after losing 3-1 to Southampton in today's Premier League clash at Upton Park.

A Morgan Schneiderlin brace and a Graziano Pelle strike undid the Hammers in front of their own fans, with Mark Noble's goal proving no more than a consolation.

Allardyce told reporters after the game: "We weren't good enough. Southampton taught us a lesson, we weren't sharp enough and didn't retain the ball as well as they did, close down as well as they did and gifted them two goals.

"The big problem I had with the corner [for the second goal] was that it was a goal-kick of course. I've had a look at it on the laptop and can the referee see it?

"Having looked at it from Mike Dean's position he's got it horribly wrong when we don't need it to go against us."

West Ham currently occupy 10th place in the Premier League.

Swansea City 3-0 West Brom : Nathan Dyer brace leads Swansea City to win

Nathan Dyer scored twice as Swansea City cruised to a 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League this afternoon.

Swansea were ahead just two minutes into the tie when Gylfi Sigurdsson set up Dyer to round Ben Foster before guiding the ball into the back of the net.

Wilfried Bony had a couple of chances to double the advantage, firing just high shortly after the opener, before blasting the ball later in the half.

However, the hosts did manage to extend the lead midway through the period, with Wayne Routledge controlling a high ball into the box before hitting it on the volley.

Swansea could have had a third when Jonas Olsson mis-timed a header, nodding the ball into his own crossbar.

Bony was involved again at the start of the second half as the striker picked up the ball from Dyer just a couple of minutes after the restart, but he could not tap in.

The Welsh side wanted a penalty when Andre Wisdom cleared a Bony effort of the line, with the hosts claiming that the on-loan midfielder used his hand, but the referee waved away their appeal.

It did not matter though, as Swansea did score a third a few minutes later, with Dyer firing a powerful low effort past Foster to complete his brace.

West Brom finished the match strongly as they sought a late consolation goal, but Saido Berahino just missed the target, while Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a late save.

The result leaves Swansea at the top of the Premier League table, while West Brom sit 17th.

Queens Park Rangers 1-0 Sunderland : Charlie Austin strikes gives Queens Park Rangers first win of season

Queens Park Rangers have secured their first win of the new Premier League season after beating Sunderland 1-0 this afternoon.

Both teams looked for an early goal, with Connor Wickham trying to get the ball into the box for the visitors before Joey Barton tried to set up Charlie Austin for QPR.

Rob Green had to make a save a few minutes later as Steven Fletcher unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box, but the Hoops' keeper directed it over.

Summer signing Leroy Fer hit the crossbar with a 25-yard effort as he tried to break the deadlock for QPR, but Sunderland were able to clear from the rebound.

Harry Redknapp's side continued to press heading into stoppage time in first half, and finally managed to edge ahead when Austin fired through a crowded penalty area.

Jack Rodwell tried to get Sunderland back on level terms at the start of the second half, but sent his shot straight at Green.

Fletcher was also involved early in the second period as he tried to set up Santiago Vergini, but the defender's shot also went straight into the hands of the keeper.

Green has to remain alert as full time approached, but he kept out a late Jozy Altidore effort to ensure that the hosts held on for the victory.

Newcastle United 3-3 Crystal Palace : Wilfried Zaha rescues late point for Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha came off the bench to secure Crystal Palace a point in a pulsating 3-3 draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park this afternoon.

Palace led inside one minute when Dwight Gayle, who scored a hat-trick against Walsall in the League Cup during the week, converted from close range after Tim Krul had denied Marouane Chamakh.

Jason Puncheon came close to making it 2-0 after 10 minutes, but the midfielder could only fire high and wide of the crossbar following bright work from Yannick Bolasie.

Emmanuel Riviere had a half-chance for Newcastle mid-way through the first period after strong play from Siem de Jong, but Scott Dann just beat the forward to the cross.

Moussa Sissoko was next to come close for the home team, but his effort was deflected over the crossbar during a dominant period for the Magpies.

Opportunities continued to arrive late in the half, but it was Daryl Janmaat that poked home Newcastle's equaliser from close range after 37 minutes.

Palace were back in front in the early stages of the second half, however, when Puncheon found the back of the net following bright work from Bolasie.

The away side should have had a third just before the hour mark when Martin Kelly dribbled into the Newcastle box before arrowing one towards the bottom corner, but Krul was on hand to make a brilliant save.

Newcastle were down the other end with Yoan Gouffran after 63 minutes, but Dann came across to deny the Frenchman with a diving challenge.

The home side were level after 73 minutes, however, when Rolando Aarons headed home from close range.

Zaha, who joined Palace on loan from Manchester United last week, had two good opportunities to win it for Palace late on, but was denied by the diving Krul on both occasions.

Aarons then had a chance for the home side after finding some space inside the box, but the teenager curled his effort just wide of the post in what was a stunning cameo.

Aarons was also involved in Newcastle's third when his effort smashed the post and Williamson was on hand to finish from close range, but Palace secured a point in stoppage time when Zaha finished past Krul.

Manchester City 0-1 Stoke City : Mame Biram Diouf hands Stoke City shock win at the Etihad

Former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf scored the only goal of the match as Stoke City picked up a shock win over Manchester City at the Etihad this afternoon.

City's first half-chance arrived after five minutes when Yaya Toure threatened to meet a header from Vincent Kompany, but the Ivorian could not make contact inside a crowded penalty box and the danger was cleared.

City were next to come close after 12 minutes when Bacary Sagna found Samir Nasri inside the box, but the Frenchman's effort was straight at Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The away side had a big penalty shout after 20 minutes when Aleksandar Kolarov appeared to fell Diouf inside the box, but referee Lee Mason was not interested despite contact being made.

Peter Crouch threatened for Stoke just past the 30-minute mark, but his effort from the edge of the box was straight into the arms of England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The home side continued to dominate possession late in the half, but were unable to make the breakthrough, with Toure striking the crossbar in stoppage time.

City had a series of half-chances in the early moments of the second period, but it was Stoke that took the lead just before the hour mark when Diouf raced the length of the field before finishing under Hart, who could not collect.

Stoke had another chance moments later, but Peter Odemwingie could not find the run of Diouf, who would have had a tap-in.

Edin Dzeko came close for City 20 minutes from time, but the forward could not keep his header down. Crouch did keep his header down for Stoke moments later, but his effort was straight at Hart.

City continued to force the issue in the latter stages - and had a couple of penalty appeals - but the champions could not make the breakthrough as Stoke held on for a shock win.

Raheem Sterling: 'Mario Balotelli can replace Luis Suarez'

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has tipped Mario Balotelli to fill the void left by Luis Suarez's exit.

The Italy international joined the Reds from AC Milan for around £16m on Monday, and the 19-year-old thinks that the former Manchester City star can help compensate for Suarez's £75m switch to Barcelona.

He told FourFourTwo: "He's a massive player. The manager has brought him in and it's exciting times for Liverpool. This is a step forward after losing Luis at the start of the season.

"[Balotelli] has come in to try and fill the void left by Luis and I think he has the qualities to do so. I'm looking forward to working with him and I think he can be an important player for the club.

"Obviously we lost a goalscorer in Luis so it's something we're going to need to replace. He'll also bring a presence on the pitch, especially up front, as part of our attack."

Liverpool travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
