Newcastle United Vs Arsenal Preview

With just one victory to their name, Arsene Wenger would no doubt have hoped for a better start to the new season from his Arsenal side ahead of their trip to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the home side are still awaiting their first Premier League win under the management of Steve McClaren, but they are likely to have taken some confidence from their last two outings.

Newcastle United
What a difference a week makes in football. Following a draw and a defeat from Newcastle's opening two clashes against Southampton and Swansea City respectively, questions were already being asked about whether or not McClaren had the credentials to steady what many regard to be a sinking ship.

However, a highly credible 0-0 draw away at Manchester United, followed by a comfortable 4-1 victory over League Two side Northampton Town in the League Cup, has lifted the spirits on Tyneside.

Of course it is always positive to score goals, but it was the result achieved at Old Trafford that truly caught the eye. In many ways it was a very un-Newcastle-like performance.

Having rode their luck during the opening 15 minutes - during which the hosting Red Devils could and perhaps should have scored a couple of goals - the Magpies looked a well organised unit, with Fabricio Coloccini producing a true captain's performance at the heart of the defence. The point was a welcome one given that it ended a sequence of seven straight defeats on the road, but it could have been even better had new signing Florian Thauvin been able to stretch just a little bit further in the closing stages.

Following that outing, McClaren took the opportunity to freshen his side up for the tie against Northampton as a number of players that had not featured this season took centre stage. New signing Thauvin, who opened the scoring at St James' Park, in particular earned positive reviews.

Newcastle's problems last term following the departure of Alan Pardew and the subsequent appointment of John Carver were well documented and it was only a victory over West Ham United on the final day of the season that secured the club's Premier League status.

Prior to that, the team had gone 10 matches without a victory, which when you include this term's games as well, stretches to one win in 13 Premier League outings.

Arsenal
This was supposed to be the year that Arsenal stepped up from top four also-rans to genuine title contenders. Of course the season is only three games old and there are still plenty of points left to play for, but Wenger's men have been less than impressive.

New signing Petr Cech, who according to Chelsea skipper John Terry would be worth up to 15 points for the Gunners, struggled on debut during the 2-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham United, which was followed by a somewhat fortuitous 2-1 victory away at Crystal Palace.

Then, last time out against the Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, the cliche 'a game of two halves' could not have been more accurate. During the opening 45 minutes, Arsenal's inexperienced centre-back pairing of Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista struggled, while numerous passes went astray from the usually dependable Santi Cazorla. But, to the home side's credit, they improved after the restart and in fact created enough chances to win the game.

Looking ahead to this game, Wenger has admitted that he is wary of Newcastle, particularly after their display at United.

"They have just come out from a good result at Manchester United so it's important that we prepare well and we give absolutely everything to win this game before the [international] break," he said.

Wenger's men were quite impressive on the road last term, with their return of 10 victories from 19 outings only being bettered by champions Chelsea.

Arsenal may actually relish an away trip, particularly considering that they have failed to score in five of their previous six Premier League home outings. During that same time period, on the road the North Londoners have found the net on 11 occasions.

Arsenal's experienced centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny sat out the 0-0 draw with Liverpool, and Wenger has confirmed that both are doubts for this encounter.

However, he did reveal that if either were to play, it would most likely be Koscielny, who has been suffering with a back injury.

Further forward, reports have suggested that England internationals Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both pushing for inclusions, but it looks like they will once again have to settle for a place among the substitutes.

As for Newcastle, Aleksandar Mitrovic spearheaded the attack at Old Trafford, but Papiss Cisse could be given the nod this time around.

There could also be a return at right-back for Daryl Janmaat following his completion of a one-match suspension.

Newcastle possible starting lineup:
Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini, Taylor, Haidara; Anita, Colback, Wijnaldum, Perez, Obertan; Cisse

Arsenal possible starting lineup:
Cech; Bellerin; Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal; Coquelin, Cazorla; Ramsey, Ozil, Sanchez; Giroud

Head To Head
One thing that this fixture has provided of late is goals. With the thrilling 4-4 draw in February 2011 included, the last nine meetings between these sides have seen the net bulge 34 times.

St James' Park has been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal, who have not lost there since 2005. They have also won the last seven games in a row against the men from Tyneside.

Overall, Arsenal edge the head to head record 72-66, with 38 draws thrown in.

On the player front, there is every chance that Arsenal frontman Olivier Giroud will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing Newcastle. The French striker has scored eight goals in his last six appearances against them.

Arsenal VS Liverpool Preview

This will be a better test of Liverpool’s recovery this season after the traumas of the last campaign. They arrive at the Emirates with a pristine record to date, but with only one win at Arsenal in 15 years and with the hosts intent upon making amends for their opening weekend home defeat to West Ham. Arsène Wenger’s side looked more like their spritely selves at Selhurst Park last Sunday and pose far more of a threat with the forward propulsion of Alexis Sánchez in their ranks. Liverpool cannot permit the Chilean the same space to revel afforded him by Palace.

Memphis Depay: 'Wasteful Manchester United must improve'

Memphis Depay has urged Manchester United to improve their finishing following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils registered 20 shots - eight of which were on target - as the Magpies held firm and left the Theatre of Dreams with a hard-fought point.

Having won their first two games - both by a 1-0 scoreline - the stalemate with Newcastle was United's first dropped points of the season, and Depay says that their profligacy is an issue.

"I could have finished a couple of chances but I didn't and I have to work on that," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"It was frustrating. We started great and sharp and we created some chances but didn't finish them. The second half also we created some more chances but again we didn't finish it so that was the frustration.

"When you look back you have to say it was one of those days but we have to start finishing. But we have to look forward and train and be ready for Club Brugge on Wednesday."

United travel to Belgium this week for the second leg of their Champions League playoff with Club Brugge, with Louis van Gaal's side leading 3-1.

Arsene Wenger: 'Liverpool will miss Raheem Sterling'

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has suggested that Liverpool will miss the presence of Raheem Sterling this season despite the addition of Roberto Firmino.

The Reds sold the England international to Manchester City for £49m after he signalled his desire to leave the club by refusing to sign a new contract.

Brendan Rodgers's side invested the money gained from Sterling's sale in a £29m move for Firmino, as well as signing Christian Benteke for £32m. Despite the heavy outlay of cash, Wenger still believes that the Merseysiders will miss the 20-year-old's quality.

He told reporters: "I personally rate Raheem Sterling. We will see that in the longer term. I personally don't think that Sterling was making a lot of drama. It's just during the transfer window that that happened.

"During the season, the boy was quiet - never made any stupid statement. I don't think he made too much noise. He's a quality player. They bought Firmino. We will see what he will produce. He is a similar player.

"But let's remember, two years ago with Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling, they scored over a hundred goals. To score more than a hundred goals in the Premier League, you need special quality, and Sterling was part of that."

Arsenal face Liverpool in their Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium later today.

Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane not worried by lack of goals this season

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has insisted that he is not concerned by his lack of goals at the start of the Premier League season.

The 22-year-old has failed to find the back of the net for Spurs in their opening three matches of the campaign, but the England international is confident that he will find his form soon enough.

He told reporters: "I just think about doing the best for my team. I'm not worried about the goals, I know I've got goals in me. I just have to keep working hard for the team.

"If others are scoring goals it doesn't matter as long as we're getting results. But that's what we've got to start doing, getting the three points and we'll be happy.

"It's not the ideal start to the season but we've been playing well. We're not too concerned, there's a long way to go. We're still working on things. If we can get that win, we'll push on."

Kane scored 31 goals in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino's men last season.

Roberto Firmino "ready" to start for Liverpool ahead of Arsenal clash

Liverpool's summer arrival Roberto Firmino has insisted that he is "ready" to grab the opportunity of his first start in the team ahead of tonight's clash against Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Brazil international came off the bench to make his debut in the Reds' 1-0 win over Stoke City on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Last week, the 23-year-old made a cameo appearance in Liverpool's 1-0 triumph over Bournemouth at Anfield.

Ahead of this evening's encounter, Firmino has insisted that he is ready to start if called upon by manager Brendan Rodgers.

"I'm working hard towards [starting a game] - obviously that is my aim, but there's a healthy competition in the squad right now and the manager knows who should be starting games," the Liverpool Echo quotes Firmino as saying.

"So all I can do is keep on working so I will be ready when I am given the chance to start."

Liverpool and Manchester City are the only Premier League teams with a 100% record so far.

Tottenham Hotspur 'confident' of signing West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that chairman Daniel Levy is "working hard" to sign the player that "we want", which is believed to be West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino.

The Argentine coach has made no secret of the fact that he wants another striker to support Harry Kane.

The North London outfit have already made their interest in Berahino known when their initial bid was rejected by the Baggies last week.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs are expected to increase their offer from £18m to around £24m this week in the hope of sealing a deal.

"The chairman Daniel Levy is working hard," the newspaper quotes Pochettino as saying. "He is trying to bring in the player that we want and I think that we have confidence in him. I trust him."

Tottenham are yet to win a Premier League game this season following a defeat and two draws.

Angong Oben dies after collapsing on pitch

Cameroonian football player Leopold Angong Oben has died after collapsing on the pitch during Dynamo de Douala's second division match.

The 26-year-old was fouled in the box and won his side a penalty in their game against Colombe du Dja-et-Lobo at Reunification Stadium, but required treatment on the pitch.

Oben returned to the field but then collapsed in the 33rd minute. His teammates and medical personnel tried to revive him and he was then taken to hospital where he passed away.

Cameroon Professional Football League said in a statement: "[Oben] was evacuated to a Douala hospital where he passed away minutes after."

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Everton director Jon Woods: 'We won't sell John Stones to Chelsea'

Everton director Jon Woods has reiterated the club's stance by insisting that defender John Stones will not be sold before the transfer deadline on September 1.

Chelsea have been in hot pursuit of the England international, who is a regular starter for the Merseyside outfit.

Three bids are said to have come in from Jose Mourinho, but Everton have held firm and rejected all of them - the latest thought to be in the region of £30m.

The reigning Premier League champions are reportedly lining up an improved offer of around £40m, but during the Toffees' 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, Woods claimed that he nor chairman Bill Kenwright have the desire to sell the 21-year-old.

"I won't sell him, Bill won't sell him, because there aren't many days to go," The Guardian quotes Woods as saying.

Stones signed for Everton in 2013 from Barnsley.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique "not interested" in Neymar to Man United rumours

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has refused to discuss speculation linking Neymar with a move to Manchester United.

Reports emerged over the weekend suggesting that the Premier League giants have held talks with Barca regarding a potential shock deal.

However following Barcelona's opening La Liga 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, Enrique claimed that he had no time for the rumours.

According to FourFourTwo, when asked if there had been any contact between the club and United, Enrique said: "I heard Neymar and another club and I am no longer interested in this question.

"I don't talk about rumours and this kind of thing. I am just focused on analysing my team. In perfect English - you got it?"

Neymar, who has three years remaining on his contract, was not included in the squad for the opening weekend of the Spanish season as he continues to recover from mumps.

Karim Benzema 'ready for £50m Arsenal move'

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema would seriously consider a move to Arsenal if they make a bid, according to a report.

The French international has been heavily linked with a move to the Gunners this summer, but with no formal bid from the North London club, Benzema has pledged his loyalty to Los Merengues.

However, the Daily Star quotes a source close to the player as saying that it is up to Arsenal to "fight for Karim with a big offer". The Spanish giants are said to value the former Lyon forward at around £50m.

It is thought that Arsenal's biggest competition for his signature would come from Manchester United, who are still believed to be in the market for a world-class striker.

Benzema was left out of Real's goalless draw away to Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

Everton VS Manchester City Preview

Roberto Martínez was effusive in his praise of Manuel Pellegrini’s team on Friday. “City look sharper than ever,” he said. “They look like title challengers after only two games and that is an incredible statement.” It is also a fair statement to make after City opened with two 3-0 wins, the second a comprehensive defeat of Chelsea, but Everton took many by surprise with the manner of their own 3-0 win at Southampton last weekend and will pose a stern test to City should they recreate that fine team performance.

West Bromwich Albion VS Chelsea Preview

Visits to The Hawthorns have had dire ramifications for recent Chelsea managers. André Villas Boas and Roberto di Matteo were ousted soon after defeats in the Black Country and, while the same fate will not await José Mourinho, this is still an awkward trip at a tricky time. The champions are enduring their worst start since 1998 and, having toasted the arrivals of Baba Rahman and Pedro Rodríguez, are anxious for a first win this term. Tony Pulis has beaten Mourinho with Crystal Palace and West Brom in the last 16 months. His own side’s slow start to the season could also do with a fillip.

Manchester United table record bid for Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller

Manchester United have allegedly launched a club-record bid for Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.

The Red Devils have offered €85m (£59.8m) for the Germany international, according to Bild.

Muller has been linked with United all summer, with the Premier League side rumoured to have had two previous bids rejected.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge rubbished speculation linking Muller with a move to Old Trafford only last month, while the player himself has downplayed reports that he could leave the Bundesliga champions.

Muller found the net twice last weekend as Bayern thrashed Hamburger SV 5-0 in Bavaria.

United's current record signing is Angel Di Maria, who cost £59.7m when he joined from Real Madrid in 2014.

Chelsea to hijack Manchester United deal for Pedro

Chelsea could make a last-ditch bid to hijack Manchester United's deal to sign Barcelona forward Pedro, according to a report.

Speculation yesterday claimed that United chief executive Ed Woodward had flown to Spain to finalise details of the signing, but a new report claims that Roman Abramovich's Chelsea are also interested in the Spanish international.

The Daily Mail claims that although the Red Devils remain in pole position to sign the winger, Chelsea are ready to rival Louis van Gaal's side for his signature.

The paper states that the Premier League champions were looking at the 28-year-old earlier in the summer and suggests that they are now rekindling that interest.

The report also alleges that Manchester City are interested in Pedro, but that they will only make a move if they are thwarted in their attempts to sign Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

Despite ongoing speculation of a move, Pedro started the second leg of Barca's Spanish Super Cup defeat to Athletic Bilbao yesterday.

Bournemouth’s first away game as a Premier League club takes them to Anfield where Eddie Howe will be looking for his newly-promoted side to rectify the profligacy that contributed to their opening defeat by Aston Villa. Liverpool created fewer chances in their first game at Stoke City but took the three points that matter and, for all the pressure on Brendan Rodgers going into the campaign, his club have an ideal chance to start with two wins for only the fifth time in the Premier League era.

Tottenham complete Clinton Njie signing

Striker Clinton Njie has left Lyon to sign a long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

On Friday, Roberto Soldado departed White Hart Lane for La Liga outfit Villarreal, leaving just Harry Kane and out-of-favour Emmanuel Adebayor as Mauricio Pochettino's options in attack.

However, the Argentine has wasted little time in strengthening that department with the acquisition of Njie, who has signed a five-year deal in North London.

The 22-year-old leaves Lyon having scored eight goals in 43 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, while he has also netted six times in 11 games for Cameroon.

The fee being paid by Spurs has not been disclosed by either club.

Pellegrini swipes: 'Jose Mourinho will probably park the bus'

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has vowed to attack Premier League champions Chelsea at Eastlands this afternoon.

The rivals renew hostilities as City look to maintain their strong start to the campaign by securing a win that would take them four points clear of the Blues after two games.

Both league meetings last season ended 1-1, and the Chilean expects his Portuguese counterpart to adopt a defensive mentality synonymous with Mourinho's Chelsea.

"I don't think it will be a very attacking game," he told reporters. "In the games that we played against them they never attacked. They defend with a lot of players in their box, but they are a very dangerous team on the counter-attack.

"We will attack, as always. We will play the way that we always do because we think that is the best way for us to win. That does not mean that we cannot defend, that we cannot play as a defensive team in the moments when we are struggling. But it should not be our intention from the beginning to score only one goal and try to finish the game.

"Here, we continue to play in the way that we think is the best. My way of thinking, as managers, we must take care of the Premier League. There are so many fans that want to see the games or watch on TV and I don't like my team to just score one goal and then go backwards until the game is finished."

Pellegrini's men opened their 2015-16 season with a convincing 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, while 10-man Chelsea, who will miss goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois through suspension, drew 2-2 with Swansea City.

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal are "too nice"

Arsene Wenger has said that his Arsenal troops are "too nice" and demanded aggression in this afternoon's trip to Crystal Palace.

The Gunners slumped a shock 2-0 defeat to West Ham United at the Emirates last Sunday as their Premier League campaign began on a bum note.

"Sometimes, we are maybe too nice," the Frenchman is quoted as saying by The Mirror. "If you want to say our aggressive level last Sunday was not big enough, then I would agree with you.

"Alan Pardew has done a good job at Palace. They will give everything against us. But we always expect that.

"We just need to be at our best and produce a different performance from Sunday."

Alan Pardew's side opened their season with a 3-1 win at Norwich City last week.

Manchester City rubbish fresh Kevin De Bruyne bid

Manchester City have reportedly rubbished speculation that a £50m bid for Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin De Bruyne was lodged.

It was reported earlier today that the Sky Blues tabled a big-money offer for the Belgian, having previously failed to tempt the German side to sell with £47m.

However, the Premier League club's hierarchy are "baffled" by the rumours, insisting that the latest offer is news to them, according to The Mirror.

The report goes on to claim that Wolfsburg are holding out for at least £60m for the ex-Chelsea ace, who joined them on a permanent deal in January 2014.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also said to be keen on the 24-year-old, whose contract expires in 2019.

Vincent Kompany: 'I can handle Diego Costa'

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has claimed that the key to combating Diego Costa is rising above the Chelsea striker's underhand tactics.

The Belgian is scheduled to come up against the Spain international at Eastlands this afternoon as both Premier League giants renew hostilities.

Costa has developed a reputation as one of the Premier League's finest hitmen since joining from Atletico Madrid last summer.

However, the 26-year-old has also courted criticism for his tenacious nature up front, but Kompany says that the key to keeping him quiet is ignoring his physical and verbal gestures.

"He has an edge to his game that makes him a player to be careful with," he is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"His record speaks for itself. It's all you need to know about him. He finds these pockets and is incredibly efficient and deadly.

"Sometimes don't get involved too much. Play the right amount of game with him and focus on what you have to do after that."

Costa's 20 Premier League goals last term helped the Blues to their fourth title.

Chelsea 'sign Abdul Rahman Baba from Augsburg'

Chelsea have reportedly completed the signing of Augsburg defender Abdul Rahman Baba in a deal worth £21.7m.

The Ghana international has joined the Blues on a five-year deal and is about to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Star.

The Blues are said to have paid £14m up front for Baba, with the transfer fee rising depending on appearances and the player's performance.

Baba is expected to challenge Cesar Azpilicueta for the left-back position at Chelsea.

Manchester City 'enter Pedro race'

Manchester City have entered the race to sign Pedro from Barcelona this summer, according to a report.

The 28-year-old has long been linked with a move to City's local rivals Manchester United after seeing his first team opportunities limited by the form of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar last season.

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez earlier revealed that Pedro had handed in a transfer request at the Camp Nou in an effort to force a move.

Old Trafford appeared to be the most likely destination for the Spaniard, but Marca reports that City have now expressed an interest in the winger.

The 2013-14 Premier League champions' football director Txiki Begiristain is understood to have contacted that Spanish giants and could make a bid closer to Barca's asking price of €30m (£21.3m) in the coming days.

Barca are thought to be reluctant to sell Pedro until Neymar recovers from mumps, although the winger was left out of the club's starting lineup for their UEFA Super Cup clash with Sevilla this evening.

Lionel Messi full of praise for Pedro

Lionel Messi has paid tribute to Barcelona teammate Pedro after watching him clinch the UEFA Super Cup in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night.

It was Messi who stole the show early in the match with two free-kicks, but Pedro decided a thrilling encounter in Tbilisi by coming off the bench to secure a 5-4 victory over Sevilla in extra time.

The Spaniard is rumoured to be close to joining Manchester United, despite insisting that he has not requested a move, and Messi believes that he deserved a special moment.

"He deserved it for everything he has given and continues to give to the club," he told reporters. "I don't know what will happen with him - it's a decision he has to take - but whatever he does, he deserves it."

Pedro has won 20 trophies during his time with Barcelona.

Juventus launch Ramires move

Juventus have reportedly identified Chelsea midfielder Ramires as the perfect candidate to strengthen their squad before the end of the transfer window.

The Brazilian quickly fell down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge last season following the arrival of Cesc Fabregas, and with the likes of John Obi Mikel and Ruben Loftus-Cheek also battling for spots in the centre of midfield, opportunities appear to be limited.

According to the Evening Standard, Juventus have made an enquiry about the 28-year-old's availability but it remains unclear whether Jose Mourinho is willing to allow him to leave this summer.

Juventus responded to the departures of Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo by signing Sami Khedira earlier in the window, but with the German now facing a spell on the sidelines, the report suggests that the Italian champions are hopeful of securing Ramires on loan or permanently.

Ramires currently has two years remaining on his contract.

Chelsea approach PSG over signing Gregory van der Wiel

Chelsea have reportedly approached Paris Saint-Germain to discuss the possibility of signing right-back Gregory van der Wiel.

Earlier this month, the Dutchman was quoted as saying that the French champions want him to leave this summer.

However, the latest reports have claimed that PSG are prepared to offer the defender a new deal.

According to Le Parisien, Chelsea have been attracted to the player and approached the Ligue 1 side regarding a potential transfer, but the Premier League champions were knocked back in their efforts.

Manchester United have also been linked to Van der Wiel.

Tottenham Hotspur to reject any Harry Kane approach

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made it clear to Manchester United that they have no intention of selling Harry Kane this summer.

Kane enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Spurs last season as he netted 31 goals in all competitions, and his form was soon followed by reports that United were interested in his services.

It was reported earlier this week that Louis van Gaal was still keen to bring the 22-year-old to Old Trafford, but The Guardian claims that Spurs are not willing to discuss any potential deal.

The report suggests that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy met United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in May to inform him that Kane was not for sale, and the club will not change their stance this summer.

Van Gaal could be set to shake up his attack as Javier Hernandez continues to be linked with a move away from the club, which would leave Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as the only two strikers in the squad.

Pedro denies reports he wants to leave Barcelona

Barcelona forward Pedro has denied reports that he wants to leave the club.

The 28-year-old, who has found first-team opportunities limited by the form of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, was confined to the bench for Barca's 5-4 victory over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday night.

Speaking after coming on as a substitute and scoring the winning goal in extra time, Pedro refuted claims that he has lodged a transfer request but admitted that the lack of first-team opportunities makes his situation "complicated".

He told reporters: "When there are rumours that I can leave it is not an easy situation for me. I have always tried to give my best to the club. I am ambitious and I want to play as much as possible.

"I was angry when I knew I had to stay on the bench, having had a chance with Neymar's illness.

"I don't want to leave Barcelona but it is a complicated situation. It is not a money question, but a continuity question. I want to play. Luis Enrique preferred other players and I have been waiting a lot of time."

A host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal, have been linked with Pedro.

Goal Zone Premier League Team of the Week

There always tends to be one coupon-buster on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and the bookmakers were not to be disappointed once again.

Arsenal were the unfortunate ones on this occasion, while champions Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

Elsewhere, there were victories for the two Manchester clubs, as well as for Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

There was to be no winner in the games at Goodison Park and St James' Park, both of which saw the sides on show share four goals evenly.

Following all the action, Goal Zone picks its best XI, as well as selecting the biggest villain and best goal.

Adrian (West Ham United)
The Spaniard may not have been as busy in North London as he had been expecting, but he was still required to make a couple of smart stops at crucial moments. Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez in particular were left frustrated by the West Ham goalkeeper, who helped the visitors to pull off a shock victory.
Pape Souare (Crystal Palace)
His arrival at Selhurst Park back in January went a little under the radar, but people may well start to take notice of the left-back after his showing at Carrow Road. The Senegal international offered a real attacking outlet for Palace and also linked ever so well with Wilfried Zaha in front of him. If Zaha decided to cut inside, Souare was a willing runner down the left flank. His performance was capped by the clever role that he played in Palace's second goal.
Winston Reid (West Ham United)
Youngster Reece Oxford, who you will read more about shortly, was full of praise for Reid after West Ham's win at the Emirates Stadium. The midfield teenager revealed that he had been coached through much of the encounter by Reid, who put in a true leader's performance. In total, the New Zealander made three crucial blocks inside the West Ham penalty area.
Micah Richards (Aston Villa)
With the greatest of respect it seemed for a long while that Richards's career - one that had promised so much in his younger days - was drifting nowhere in particular. If his debut for Villa away at Bournemouth is anything to go by, perhaps the former England international has been revitalised by the move back to his native Birmingham. His seven interceptions helped Villa to record a crucial clean sheet.
Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)
Ever since Louis van Gaal arrived at Old Trafford last summer, he has had a problem at right-back. He decided very early on that Rafael da Silva was not the player for him, which forced Antonio Valencia, who is a winger, to drop back. However, the signing of Darmian appears to have fixed all that. Typically Italian, the 25-year-old was solid in defence and offered support to Juan Mata going forward against Spurs.

Marc Albrighton (Leicester City)
Having suffered a family tragedy during the summer, to Albrighton's credit his mind was fully on football at the King Power Stadium. Earlier in the game he set up a couple of goals and then went on to get his name on the scoresheet when he slotted in a low shot from close range.
Reece Oxford (West Ham United)
What were you doing at 16? Well, this youngster was busy strutting his stuff at the Emirates Stadium. Despite being a natural centre-back, Oxford was asked to play in midfield by manager Slaven Bilic and he looked the part as he recorded a 95% successful pass rate. All this from a player that does not turn 17 until December!
Dimitri Payet (West Ham United)
Much was expected of the summer signing from Marseille and he didn't disappoint on what was his West Ham debut. Having arrived with the reputation of being an assist-maker, it was fitting that Payet set up the away side's opening goal. More performances like this one and his £10m transfer fee is going to look incredibly cheap.
Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City)
The Algerian recently signed a new contract, and Leicester's faith was instantly repaid with a display that is still probably giving the Sunderland defenders nightmares. He scored his side's second goal with a header, before rolling in a penalty that he had won. Mahrez thought that he had scored a hat-trick after the restart, only for his effort to strike the post.
Jefferson Montero (Swansea City)
Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic is widely regarded to be one of the Premier League's best right-backs, but even the tough-tackling Serbian found it almost impossible to put a lid on Swansea's flying winger. Time and again the positive Ecuadorian twisted the home defender one way and then the other - just as he did for the Welsh side's first goal in West London.

Arouna Kone (Everton)
He may have only played the last 28 minutes at Goodison Park, but without the Ivorian's introduction, there's a fair chance that Everton would have been beaten by Watford. He created the home side's opener for Ross Barkley, before going on to score himself late on to salvage a point.

Numpty of the Week
Petr Cech (Arsenal): Chelsea skipper John Terry insisted that Cech would be worth around 15 points for Arsenal this season, but on what was his competitive debut, the goalkeeper ultimately cost his new side the game.

Perhaps the Arsenal rearguard was a little too high for the first West Ham goal, but that was still no reason for the experienced Cech to come racing off his line - a decision that gave Cheikhou Kouyate a simple headed chance to break the deadlock. Then, after the restart, the 33-year-old will have been disappointed that Mauro Zarate got the better of him at his near post. There is little doubt that Cech will be a positive addition for the Gunners, but it's not the best of starts to his career in North London.

Goal of the Week

Philippe Coutinho - Stoke City vs. (Liverpool): The Brazilian is starting to make a habit of scoring memorable goals from distance. It seemed that the visitors were going to have to settle for a 0-0 draw when Joe Gomez rolled the ball into Coutinho, who instantly and sharply spun away from his marker Steve Sidwell.

The 23-year-old then advanced towards the Stoke penalty area, but before he reached it, the playmaker unleashed a curling effort that flew beyond the reach of Jack Butland and into the net, much to the delight of the travelling faithful behind the goal. It was a goal worthy of winning any Premier League encounter.

Barcelona VS Sevilla Preview

Barcelona will attempt to equal Milan’s record of five Uefa Super Cups without Neymar who has been sidelined with illness, opening the door for Pedro, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United of late. Barça are also without the injured duo Jordi Alba and Douglas while their new signings Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal, signed from Sevilla, cannot play until January but have made the trip to Tbilisi. Sevilla contest the Super Cup for the second year in a row, having successfully defended the Europa League last season, and again face Spanish opposition after losing 2-0 to Real Madrid 12 months ago. The Sevilla coach, Unai Emery, has not beaten Barcelona in 19 matches but has the new signings Yevhen Konoplyanka and Ciro Immobile, although Adil Rami is a doubt due to illness.

Things have not started well for Slaven Bilic and, after his Europa League shadow team selection gamble backfired and West Ham were knocked out of the competition by Astra Giurgiu, their supporters are already grumbling. Manchester United VS Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Louis van Gaal does not wish to suffer a repeat of last season’s opening day defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford yet he enters this match with unwanted headaches. David de Gea will not play because he is distracted by Real Madrid’s interest and to replace his No1 the manager has only the untested Sam Johnstone or Sergio Romero. Bastian Schweinsteiger, his headline central midfield summer signing, is not match-fit and, if Wayne Rooney was to suffer injury, Van Gaal has only Javier Hernández or James Wilson to replace his central striker. Given the £230m investment the manager has overseen in his 12 months in charge United should still defeat Tottenham.

Man United flop Angel Di Maria now tops the list of the 10 most expensive footballers ever

If you look at cumulative transfer fees, Di Maria has just replaced his new PSG team mate at the top of a pretty impressive list

We all know world class footballers don't come cheap. But even by the standards of the world's most expensive players, Angel Di Maria has proven to be a particularly pricey purchase.

When he signed for Man United, the £59.7m fee made him the most expensive player in British football history. Now that PSG have paid £46m to take him off United's hands, he is officially the most expensive footballer of all time.

Gareth Bale still holds the record for the highest single transfer fee (£85m), but in terms of TOTAL transfer fees, no player has had more money spent on them than the gangly Argentinian.

Check out the full top 10 below. Interesting point to note: three of them once played for Man United…

10. Nicolas Anelka: £86.8m
Biggest single fee paid - Real Madrid, £23m

9. Radamel Falcao: £89.6m
Biggest single fee paid - Monaco, £53m

8. Gareth Bale: £92m
Biggest single fee paid - Real Madrid, £85m

7. Cristiano Ronaldo: £92.2m
Biggest single fee paid - Real Madrid, £80m

6. Juan Sebastian Veron: £92.7m
Biggest single fee paid - Man United, £28.1m

5. Hernan Crespo: £95.9m
Biggest single fee paid - Lazio, £35.5m

4. Luis Suarez: £103.5m
Biggest single fee paid - Barcelona, £75m

3. James Rodriguez: £105m
Biggest single fee paid - Real Madrid, £63m

2. Zlatan Ibrahimovic: £126.7m
Biggest single fee paid - Barcelona, £59m

1. Angel Di Maria: £134.3m

Chelsea 0-1 Fiorentina: 5 things we learned as the Blues signed off pre-season with defeat

Gonzalo Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game as Jose Mourinho's men signed off in disappointing fashion ahead of the Premier League kick-off

Chelsea ended their pre-season in sluggish style as Fiorentina ran away victors at Stamford Bridge.

Gonzalo Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game as Jose Mourinho's men ended signed off in disappointing fashion ahead of the Premier League kick-off.

The Blues, making seven changes from the team that fell to Community Shield defeat last weekend, never really got going as an array of fringe players failed to grasp the opportunity to push for a first-team place.

Chelsea now switch their attention to Swansea on Saturday and the start of their title defence.

Here are five things we learned tonight:

Juan Cuadrado could be "like a new signing" - but not on tonight's evidence
When Juan Cuadrado arrived amid much fanfare in January few would have imagined that it would be the man heading the other way to tonight's opponents, Mo Salah, who hogged all the headlines in the season's second half.

Salah dazzled in Florence while Cuadrado fizzled in west London. It remains to be seen, then, whether he can produce as we head into his first full season on our shores.

Anyone who watched him at last summer's World Cup can tell you that he has talent, but, on the contrary, anyone who watched him at Fiorentina can tell you he doesn't always use it.

In a very un-Chelsea way Chelsea haven't been big players in the summer transfer window. That could of course all change if John Stones comes in before the window slams shut but by the Blues standards it has been a quiet and penny pinching offseason.

That gives the likes of Cuadrado a chance to really stamp his authority on the side this year and become a regular piece of the puzzle. He was lively and neat and tidy this evening without being too spectacular.

He needs more. For £20m plus Chelsea want more. With Willian ahead of him he'll have to do more. If he does he could be like the new signing Chelsea haven't made.

RADAMEL FALCAO ISNT YET FIT
On a star-studded bench Diego Costa's name was conspicuous by its absence.

Mourinho left him out of the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at the weekend with fears continuing over his troublesome hamstring.

And Jose again chose to rest the Spaniard against Fiorentina and heading into the new season the health of his star striker must be his biggest headache. For all of Chelsea's class and talent their hopes both at home and abroad will still live and die on Costa's fragile body and his ability to get it out on the pitch more often than not.

With Loic Remy still flattering to deceive - he was hauled off after just 45 minutes at the weekend - Radamel Falcao projects to be the man charged with filling Costa's hefty boots. A stern test for any forward in world football, let alone one still scratching around for form.

The much-maligned Colombian figures to be one of the storylines of the season regardless of what he does out on the pitch. Fail and it's a Louis van Gaal "I told you so", succeed and Mourinho will never let his Dutch rival forget it.

Tonight he was blowing from the off. He got a 45 minute run out last weekend and a little longer this evening but he'll need more miles in his legs before he's sharp enough to adequately replace the rapier-like Costa. Remy is still the clubhouse leader ahead of Swansea.

TRAORE COULD BE A WILDCARD
After finally getting a work permit this summer the youngster from Burkina Faso can at last show Chelsea what he can do now after years in the Vitesse wilderness. And he looks the part already.

Traore looked good, even though he was deployed somewhat out of position at left back in Mourinho's chosen 4-2-3-1 system. Despite that he settled in well and dovetailed nicely with Moses, Oscar and Falcao ahead of him up the pitch.

Now, there is a certain PFA Player of the Year in his way if he is to force his way into the starting XI in his chosen position, and at 19 he still has some way to go, but he certainly has the raw materials to give it a good go.

Chelsea are blessed with an abundance of attacking options that are the envy of the league, but should Mourinho want a wildcard this season at any time Traore could be his man.

AS COULD OLA AINA
Mourinho has already hinted that a few more of the Blues prodigious youth teamers could get a first-team look in this term. And while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is the favourite to be the first cab off the rank, another may not be too far behind.

Ola Aina got the nod at right back this evening and didn't look out of place at all in a solid first 45. The England U19 international is highly thought of at Stamford Bridge and has the ability and versatility to play on either flank of a back four.

That could prove a valuable string to the 18-year-old's bow, as with Filipe Luis' replacement yet to be finalised Mourinho could be tempted to utilise Aina as a left field understudy for first choice Cesar Azpilicueta if a deal can't be done elsewhere.

CHELSEA ARENT YET AT IT
Despite a second-half comeback of sorts Chelsea didn't look on the pace against Arsenal on Sunday. They were second off the mark, second to every ball and in truth very much second best.

If Jose had demanded an improvement prior to tonight he didn't get it.

They again didn't look at the races, especially in a first half where they didn't register a single shot on goal. Of course, the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas were largely left in reserve but with numerous internationals still getting the nod it's fair to say Mourinho would have wanted better.

With just three days before Swansea and the start of their Premier League title defence they could be forgiven for having half an eye on the weekend but Mourinho will certainly have wanted his troops to be looking a lot less undercooked ahead of the big kick-off than they do right now. There may be trouble ahead.

Paris Saint-Germain to unveil Angel di Maria on Thursday

Argentina winger Angel di Maria will reportedly be unveiled as a Paris Saint-Germain player tomorrow evening.

The Manchester United playmaker is edging closer to completing a move to the French champions, and ESPN reports that the Parisian outfit will announce the arrival of the 27-year-old on Thursday.

The former Real Madrid wideman has recently been in Doha undergoing a medical, after failing to nail down a first-team place under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Di Maria joined United for a British record fee of £59.7m last summer.

Manchester United, Barcelona agree on Pedro fee

Manchester United have reportedly agreed a fee with Barcelona for the transfer of Spanish forward Pedro.

Louis van Gaal's pursuit of the World Cup winner has been well-documented over the past few weeks, and Goal.com suggests that the two clubs have now agreed on a £22.3m (€32m) fee for the frontman.

The same report states that Barcelona want to keep hold of the 28-year-old until after their Uefa Super Cup appearance next week before any transfer goes ahead.

Pedro has made 204 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 58 goals for the Catalonian club.

David de Gea's girlfriend hints at Real Madrid switch

David de Gea's girlfriend has reportedly all-but confirmed that the goalkeeper will eventually move to La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Manchester United player has been heavily linked with a move to the club and is now expected to join next summer when his United contract runs out.

One of main factors in De Gea's potential move is reported to be his girlfriend, Edurne Garcia.

She is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo: "Now, when he is in Madrid everything will be much easier."

De Gea joined United in 2011 from Real's city neighbours Atletico Madrid.

Jose Mourinho: 'For me the transfer window is over now that the season is here'

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that he will not be thinking about the transfer window now that the new Premier League season is approaching, but has refused to rule out a move for Everton youngster John Stones.

The Blues' pursuit of the 21-year-old centre-back has been ongoing throughout the summer, but Mourinho has stated that his main focus will now move towards his own squad as they prepare for Saturday's clash with Swansea City.

"What happens happens, but I won't lose any time thinking about the transfer window," Mourinho told talkSPORT.

"For me the transfer window is over. I don't like the transfer window open when the competition starts. I know it is open, I know my club can buy or sell, but I don't like that feeling.

"As a coach I am thinking about my players, my squad, and I don't want to think about transfers. Clubs and players need quiet time and respect when the competition starts."

Chelsea have already brought in the likes of Asmir Begovic, Radamel Falcao and Nathan this summer.

Jack Wilshere faces three weeks injured as new season starts

Arsenal have been dealt a blow with the news that Jack Wilshere will miss the first three weeks of the season, according to reports.

The midfielder missed the Gunners win over Chelsea in the Community Shield due to an ankle problem he picked up in training, but manager Arsene Wenger hinted that he would be available to play against West Ham United this weekend.

However, the Daily Mail claims that the 23-year-old will miss the first three weeks of the new campaign, and is a doubt for England's Euro 2016 qualification double-header against San Marino and Switzerland in September.

Wilshere has had persistent ankle problems throughout his career, and spent five months on the sidelines last season.
